Things To Do When Moving
As soon as you think about moving you need to make a to do list. The sooner you start crossing items off the better. You will also be less stressed as the move date approaches.
Now as soon as you have a move date then book a removal company (I recommend Norwich Van Man). Phone around to make sure you get the right company for your moving needs. You already have the Norwich Van Man number so why not phone our friendly team first, even if we can’t help we may know someone who can.
Next up start to eat all your frozen food and items that will spoil or need thrown away if they are not used by the move date. While enjoying the feast make a packing plan, don’t forget the Garage, Attic, Basement or Shed. The more packed up and ready to go you are then the quicker and easier the move.
Start to make a list of everybody you need to let know your moving including friends, family, magazine / newspaper suppliers and organizations like doctors. Remember you may need to sign up to a new doctor or dentist. Looking into the royal mail post redirecting service will be worthwhile. Also at this point start letting the electric, gas, phone, Banks, insurance (car and home) and internet companies know you are moving, Some may be able to transfer their service to the new address or you can use this situation to phone around and try and get a better deal. While on the phone to the home insurance company have them extend your policy to cover the move, its worth the peace of mind of having your items insured. Phone some box companies for packing your items they do vary in cost a lot.
Now this should take you to around 6 weeks from the move date. If you are moving due to a work request then now’s the time to see if they will assist with cost, if self employed phone the accountant and see if anything is tax deductible. Make sure you have booked the correct amount of time from work. 6 Weeks to go - start packing, throwing the rubbish away (have a clean out) and selling items.
Two / Three weeks from the move date its time to knuckle down and get on top of the move. Make sure you have done or at least made a huge dent in your move list. Make sure all bills are settled. Make sure any borrowed items have been returned and that packing has started. If you have a gas cooker and intend to take it with you need to book a registered person to come and disconnect it. Your removal firm will not be trained or insured too.
As the big day approaches you need to start disconnecting things like the washing machine and defrosting cold units. Pack up your final items and make a note of the boxes you will need asap at the new house. Make sure somebody will be at the house to assist the removal company with any inquiries or to help load / unload. Make a note of all meter readings - water, electric, gas and so on. Make sure you are aware of the removal companies terms and conditions as well as all charges.
